Individualise Running Speed Thresholds

CALCULATOR AT BOTTOM OF PAGE

Sprint Speed Zones Calculator

Turn an athlete's top speed into individualised running-speed zones.

A blanket high-speed running threshold treats a flying winger and a heavy prop as the same athlete. They are not. Setting speed zones as a percentage of each athlete's own maximum velocity fixes that, so high-speed running and sprinting mean the same relative effort for everyone on the pitch.

This free calculator turns a max velocity into a full set of individualised speed zones. Enter the athlete's top speed directly, in metres per second or kilometres per hour, or work it out from a timed distance such as a flying 10 metres, and it returns six speed zones from recovery to maximal sprint in both units, along with the two thresholds coaches most want: high-speed running at 75 percent of max velocity, and the sprint threshold at 85 percent. Use it to set individual GPS thresholds, plan running drills, and make sure your fastest and slowest athletes are working at the right relative speeds.

HOW TO USE

1.  Choose a method: enter max speed, or work it out from a distance and time.

2.  Enter the values (and pick m/s or km/h if entering speed directly).

3.  Read the max velocity, the high-speed running and sprint thresholds, and the six speed zones.

WHAT YOU GET

Max velocity in km/h and m/s, the high-speed running and sprint thresholds, and six individualised speed zones.

WHO IT IS FOR

Physios, S&C coaches, and team-sport practitioners setting running and GPS thresholds.

Sprint Speed Zones

Turn an athlete's top speed into individualised running-speed zones and thresholds.
Use a flying-sprint speed (for example a timed 10 m at top speed) or a GPS max velocity.
Maximum velocity
--km/h
--m/s
--km/h
High-speed running (75% Vmax)
--km/h
Sprint threshold (85% Vmax)
Speed zones (percentage of max velocity)
Zone% of Vmaxkm/hm/s
Speed thresholds vary between sources and sports. Setting them as a percentage of an athlete's own maximum velocity individualises them, so high-speed running and sprint efforts mean the same relative intensity for every athlete. Use your own GPS or timing thresholds where you have them.
